Girl with Grit Program is an intensive but fun skills camps for girls 8 and up. Over the course of the 9 week program, girls close gaps through learning to thrive and go skills with practical, but fun hands-on projects
Our program has been called potentially life-saving and life-changing by law enforcement and behavioral scientists. Not only can teaching these skills protect our youth, it can open up interests in new career paths and hobbies through exposure to tools and beginning know-how of GRIT.
Join us weekly for a fun and unique hands-on opportunity to learn life skills with various experienced instructors. From tools to tires to financial literacy to safety on the roads, in wilderness, or at home – Girl with Grit is all about teaching surviving life’s basics.
We will be joined with instructors from Texas Women in Trades, NAWIC, MSC Direct, Frost Bank, and more.
First Workshop:
Build a Birdhouse
Students will build a birdhouse and learn about tools This module is geared towards growing handiness with tools.
Second Workshop:
Drive and Thrive
Students will learn the basics of automotive care and how to handle emergencies including how to change a tire, jump a battery, weather related roadside emergencies, vehicle maintenance – such as checking fluids and signs of needed maintenance, and more.
Third Workshop:
Trades Club
The goal of this class is to implement knowledge (i.e. wall structure, plumbing, electrical, etc.) about buildings that everyone needs to know in a fun, interactive way. Students will make their own lamps and a fun project out of PVC pipe. We will also talk to women and knowledge of the Skilled Trades.
Fourth Workshop:
Emergency 911
We will cover how to handle some very simple and some very scary emergencies. Students will get hands-on use with a fire extinguisher and knowledge on fire safety directly from a visitor from our local fire department. Students will learn how to deal with various emergencies from clogged toilets to bursting pipes to how to safely disarm a firearm and perform CPR.
Fifth Workshop:
Into the Wild
Learn basic wilderness preparation and survival from what to pack to encountering a wild animal.
Sixth Workshop:
Home DIY
Youth will learn basic household skills to help them achieve independence from hanging heavy curtains to patching a pair of jeans or a hole in the wall. Students will take home a sewing project.
Seventh Workshop:
Financial Literacy Business Basics
The goal of this workshop is to understand a basic budget and principles of financial health.
Eighth Workshop:
Financial Literacy
We will learn the basics of business through a fun and interactive pop-up business.
Certificate of Completion
Youth and families can come join us for a celebration of their new grit and skills with a review of skills taught. Students will be awarded their Certificate of Completion.
